MONTJUÏC, THE HAUNTED STONE
Over centuries a vast network of quarries was established on Montjuïc, the mountain of Barcelona. The stone was extracted from these quarries (pedreres in Catalan) by exploiting the mountain, mining its bowels, for use afterwards in constructing many thousands of buildings in the city.
The stone was extracted by the Stonemasons, els Pedrers, a secret society, more secret in fact than the Masons. Settled in Poble Sec, a neighborhood next to Montjuïc intimately connected with the mountain, els Pedrers provided the Masons with the stone for their extravagant Rock Operas, their kitsch rites:
V.I.T.R.I.O.L. Visita Interiora Terrae, Recificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem.
And so, for centuries, Barcelona grew haunted, hostage to dark secret societies and a strange lithic legend which originated right in those multiple reservoirs, in those pedreres.
The proto-urban legend (or urban proto-legend) tells of a strange property of the stone from the quarries of Montjuïc: its ability to regenerate; that is to say, the stone never gets depleted because it reproduces itself, it grows. In other words: A LIVING MINERAL. Just like that, as if we were talking of a virus, a lichen, or the breeding of some oviparous species.
The Stonemasons, as initiates, have long been guardians of the secret, a corporate secret in essence: as secret as Coca Cola’s “Merchandise 7X”, the enigma-ingredient. We are talking about a Lithic 7X, which would propitiate in this case the profitable growth of the stone to construct buildings without end.
The secret formulas are recounted in a book of a chimerical “Joan Perucho Fantastic Library”, in a medieval grimoire – clearly blasphemous – written by the nutty necromancer Petrus Apolliacum and titled De Lapis Crescente (On the Growing Stone). The text details how to breathe life into the inert, what rituals should be practiced to achieve the 7X, what sacrifices (yes, sacrifices) should be offered, and the right primordial Goddess -the Fem Deity – to be invoked in the process.
It was necessary that a grrrrrl took to the hills…

Enigmatically as ever, Nad Spiro armed only with her guitar (Pedreres is a 100% guitar only album, 100% analogik), invites us on a trip through this initiation network of quarries (now ex-quarries) with ultra-suggestive names: Machinet, Mussol, Animeta… A walk around MontjuïX, revealing the quarries via a 7X Trip to its core, to the threshold of the underground, magma, liquid in solid state or solid in SONIC state.
ESOTRONIC MUZAK
Or exo-exotica. That’s what Nad Spiro sounds like, here and now. Some of the sounds she unleashes represent another 7X formula, an audio invocation in ritual mode with (why not) Lynchian resonances, a Mondo Tulpa of suggestive and disturbing atmospheres, a sonic grimoire executed by a quarry-grrrl, the owner of the secret: coups de guitar, wave vibrations, notes as psy triggers, activating again the soul of the mineral, exciting the rock, provoking again its infinite growth:

Durante siglos, una vasta trama de canteras ha estado asentada en Montjuïc, la montaña de Barcelona. Explotándola, mordiendo sus entrañas se ha extraído de esas canteras (pedreres en catalán) la piedra que ha servido para construir en esa ciudad miles&miles&miles de edificios.
Esa piedra será extraída por los Canteros, els Pedrers, una sociedad todavía + secreta que los Masones. Asentados en el Poble Sec, barrio aledaño a Montjuïc, conectado íntimamente con la montaña, els Pedrers suministrarán a los Masones la Piedra de Montjuïc para sus extravagantes Operas Rock, sus ritos kitsch: V.I.T.R.I.O.L.

Y así, durante cientos&cientos&cientos de años, Barcelona ha crecido, embrujada, rehén de oscuras sociedades secretas y de una extraña leyenda lítica que tendrá su origen justo en esos múltiples reservorios, en esas pedreres.
La leyenda protourbana –o protoleyenda urbana– refiere una extraña virtud de la piedra de las canteras de Montjuïc: su auto-reproducción, esto es: la piedra de Montjuïc nunca se agota porque se auto-reproduce, crece. O sea: ¡UN MINERAL VIVENTE! Tal cual. Como si de un virus, un liquen o la cría de alguna especie ovípara se tratara.
Los Canteros, como iniciados, han sido los guardianes del secreto del crecimiento, misterio a fin de cuentas corporativo, tan secreto como la Merchandise 7X para la Coca-Cola, el componente-enigma. Hablaremos de un 7X Lítico, que en nuestro caso propiciará ese rentable crecimiento de la piedra con la que construir edificios nonstop.
Las fórmulas del secreto vendrán referidas en un libro escapado de una quimérica Biblioteca Fantástica Joan Perucho, en un grimorio medieval -obviamente blasfemo- redactado por el nigromante chiflado Petrus Apolliacum y titulado De lapis crescente (Sobre la piedra en crecimiento). El texto pormenoriza cómo insuflar vida a lo inerte, qué rituales practicar para lograr el 7X: qué sacrificios (sí, sacrificios) rendir y a qué diosa primordial, qué Deidad Fem, invocar en los mismos.
Era necesario que una grrrrrl se echara al monte…

Una mujer llegó a la montaña para excitar la roca. Monte de Venus en el Monte de Júpiter [hoy Montjuïc].

De un modo enigmático como de costumbre y armada solo con su guitarra –Pedreres es 100% guitar-only, 100% analogik–, Nad Spiro nos invita a un trip a través de esa iniciática trama de canteras (ahora excanteras) de nombres ultrasugerentes: Machinet, Mussol, Animeta… Un paseo por el MontjuïX, evocando esas canteras mediante ese 7X Trip a su núcleo. Al umbral del subterráneo. Magma, líquido en estado sólido o sólido en estado SÓNICO.
MUZAK ESOTRÓNICA
O exo-exótica. A eso suena Nad Spiro aquí y ahora. Algunos de los sonidos liberados/desatados por Nad suponen una Merchandise 7X otra, una invocación audio en modo rito con, por qué no, resonancias lynchianas, un Mondo Tulpa de atmósferas sugestivas e inquietantes. Un grimorio sónico ejecutado por una quarrygrrrl, la dueña del secreto: coups de guitar, vibraciones de onda, notas como psy trigger, un disparador que activará otra vez el alma del mineral, excitando la roca, provocando de nuevo su crecimiento infinito:
